Princess Luna by Groovebird Princess Luna by Groovebird
The first tangible result of my last 2 months of work.
It is not perfect.
Actually, it never is, but I'm a little closer now to making
her like I imagined.
It is made of artificial resin and epoxy putty.
The translucent mane was
a lot harder to make than I expected, the mistakes are virtually
impossible to correct, because it is not painted, but it is coloured
itself and transparent.

I don't know yet when it will be available for sale, I don't have enough time at the moment to make a decent translucent mane Luna at the moment, but if you like, I will contact you when it will be available.

She's $270 +$58 regularly, but I'm not intending to make a TRLM Luna this year for sure (I don't have time).

you should put this up on Onlyfactory.com
when it hits the goal of 300 pcs. only the people who voted on it will get them. so no ebay and other wholesales.
and when YOU upload it there, you will get a percentage of money for each piece that its sold.

Great work as always! Have you try to do a smaller mane in blue and then a bigger one in translucent, so the blue one remains inside the clear one.

So seriously not my thing but really nice work. It caught my eye as I was scrolling by. Not the sort of thing I usually stop to look at. Check out the company "smoothon" they have all sorts of resins and epoxys at really good prices.

Just FYI...
What about the tints used for plastic suncatchers and stained glass window art? Would that help you get more effects in, especially if applied with an airbrush?
Because I would like to see these become even more EPIC than they already are!

There are loads, almost countless opportunities. I'm always trying to think out something new, it's not impossible that I'll use stained window glass art in my work in the future.. we'll see.

These look nice! I sculpt as a hobby and it's really interesting how other people go about making their stuff, good work.
I'm curious about what kind of resin is it that turns out so transparent, is it the kind you pour in a mold or sculpted mixing 2 parts or...?
Also about the putty, do you lay it over the foam or is it just epoxy over armature? I saw some of your wips using foam and I was wondering how you go about covering it, perhaps just primer and paint?

Groovebird Featured By Owner Oct 21, 2013  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
It's polyester based resin, you just need a curing agent for it. It's not transparent as water, more like amber, but can easily be colored. As for the putty, I generally use it at resin sculptures for fixing little holes, and for making accessories (neck & hoof ornaments). Yes, it's only primer on the foam sculptures. And I use air dry clay for afterworks and correcture.

Though there are mistakes in the color distribution, you did an absolutely amazing job on this. I was just thinking the other day that somebody should take that toy and cast clear/tinted resin versions of the mane and tale for it. This is quite easily the best fan-made Luna figure I've ever seen. GREAT work!
